Proverbs in English

The term English proverbs are taken from the Latin word ‘ proverbial‘. It is a simple and concrete saying popularly known as repeated, which expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of mankind. They are often metaphorical.

English proverbs that describe a basic rule of conduct may also be known as a ‘ maxim‘. If a proverb is distinguished by a particularly good style, it may be known as an‘ aphorism ‘. Below given are some commonly used English proverbs and their meanings:-

1. A good beginning makes a good ending.

A good start makes the task easy.

2. A hungry man is an angry man.

A person who does not get what he wants or needs is a frustrated person and will be easily provoked to rage.

All good-looking things are not genuine.

Work and fun should go hand in hand.

Eating an apple every day is good for your health.
