History of Ganesh Chaturthi Festival

We get the evidence of organizing Ganeshotsav in the period of Satavahana, Rashtrakuta, and Chalukya dynasties. The great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji made a new beginning by connecting Ganeshotsav with nationality and culture. This form of Ganeshotsav has continued in this manner since then and continued even during the time of Peshwas.

During the time of the Peshwas, Ganesha had almost the status of a national deity, as he was their Kuldev. After the Peshwas, during the period from 1818 to 1892, this festival remained confined within the purview of Hindu homes.

Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak celebrated Ganeshotsav publicly for the first time in 1893 in Pune. Later on, this effort of his became a movement and this Ganeshotsav played an important role in uniting the people in the freedom movement. Today Ganeshotsav has taken a huge form.

Ganesh Chaturthi was started celebrated by Hindu people as an annual domestic festival with great preparation. Generally, it was started celebrating as a national festival to remove the conflict between Brahmins and non-Brahmins as well as to bring unity among the people. People in Maharashtra started celebrating during the British rule to be free from the cruel treatment of the British with great courage and nationalist fervor. The ritual of Ganesh Visarjan was established by Lokmanya Tilak.

How to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

The preparations for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival start a month or a week in advance. Highly skilled artists and artisans create various artistic clay idols of Lord Ganesha for the purpose of worship on Ganesh Chaturthi.

The entire market is filled with Ganesh idols. The whole market is gaining momentum in its full swing. It is wonderful to see that everything in the market is welcoming this big Hindu festival. To give a real look to the idols, they are decorated using many colors.

Preparations for Ganesh Chaturthi Festival

People start preparations for this ceremony at least a month or a week in advance. They make Modak (in Marathi) the favorite dish of Lord Ganesha. It has many names due to its different languages: Kadubu or Modak in Kannada, Kozhakatta, and Modakam in Malayalam, Modakam, and Kudumu in Telugu and Kozhakattai and Modgam in Tamil.

Modaks are specially prepared for the puja using rice flour or wheat flour mixed with coconut, dry fruits, spices, and jaggery. Some people make it by steaming and some by cooking it.

Another dish like modak is called karanji, but it differs in shape (semicircular shape). There is a ritual of offering Modak to Ganesha in the number 21.

How to perform Ganesh Chaturthi puja at home

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India, although it is celebrated as the most important festival of the year in Maharashtra. Many families celebrate this festival on a small scale in their homes by performing all the rituals in a similar manner. A member of the family brings home a small or a big idol (according to choice) of Ganesh Ji and establishes the idol in the temple of the house or in the middle of the house or in a big open place.

All the members of the family worship the idol of Ganesh Ji by getting up early in the morning and in the evening both till the immersion. People offer prayers, devotional songs, dance, flowers of green grass, fruits, ghee lamp, a bunch of soft grass (a yarn having 3 or 5 bunches), sweets, etc.

People perform puja both times (mainly 21 times), and end their puja with a big aarti. Aarti (at the end of the puja) is sung by the people in Maharashtra, especially the 17th century Aarti written by Sant Ramdas. The domestic ceremony ends after 1, 3, 5, 7, or 11 days on the immersion of the idol in a large water source like a river, sea, etc.

In order to stay away from the problems arising due to heavy crowds, people have gradually started avoiding going for immersion on large water bodies. People immerse Ganpati in a bucket or tub of water and later they use this soil in the garden.

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in the community

The people of the community prepare pandals in a specific area by contributing and collecting money. The people of the community bring a grand idol of Ganesha to worship. They decorate their pandal (using flowers, garlands, electric lights, etc.) to make their pandal ideal as compared to others. They make decorations based on themes depicting religious themes.

The priests of the temples dress up in red or white dhoti with a shawl. They chant mantras and offer prayers. There is a religious act of consecration and virtuous conduct (way of paying homage).

Devotees offer a variety of things to the deity including coconut, modak, jaggery, cowpea grass, flowers, red flower garland, etc. Devotees apply kumkum and sandalwood paste all over the body of the idol.

A big ritual ceremony is held every year. People chanting mantras, devotional songs, Ganapati Atharva-Sahinta from Upanishads, recited hymns from Veda Rigveda, Ganesh Stotra from Narada Purana, and many more are recited throughout the ceremony.

People celebrate this festival in different ways according to their beliefs, customs, and regional tradition. All the rituals from Ganapati Sthapana (meaning idol setting) to Ganapati Visarjan (meaning idol immersion) involve a huge crowd to be a part of the ceremony and be blessed with wisdom and prosperity for the whole year.
