चंदनगढ़ के घने जंगल में ऋषि तापस का प्रसिद्ध गुरुकुल था। दूर दूर से शिष्य वहां पढ़ने के लिए आते थे।
There was a famous Gurukula of the sage Tapas in the dense forest of Chandigarh. Disciples from far and wide used to come there to study.
एक दिन गुरु तापस अपने शिष्यों को लेकर पास के एक गांव अचलपुर गए। अचलपुर की सीमा से कोई एक किलोमीटर पहले एक शांतनीरा नामक नदी बहती थी। इसका जल वर्ष भर में कभी सूखता नहीं था। गुरु और शिष्य नदी पार करके उस गांव में पहुंचे।
One day Guru Tapas took his disciples to Achalpur, a nearby village. Someone kilometer before the border of Achalpur, a river called Shantanira flowed. Its water never dried throughout the year. The Guru and the disciple crossed the river and reached the village.
रबी की फसल की बुवाई का समय था। लेकिन अचलपुर वासी हाथ पर हाथ धरे बैठे थे, जैसे उनके पास कोई काम न हो। गुरु ने ग्रामवासियों को समझाया- ” आप लोग अपने आलस्य की बुरी आदत को छोड़ें और मेहनत करना सीखें।”
It was time to sow the Rabi crop. But the residents of Achalpur were sitting hand in hand as if they had no work. Guru explained to the villagers – “You people should quit your bad habit of laziness and learn to work hard.”
मुखिया ने गुरु तापस को अपने गांव का दुखड़ा सुनाया- ” खेती करें तो कैसे? वर्षा हुई नहीं, कुओं में जल नहीं?” गुरु मुसकराकर बोले- ” इस गांव को वरदान, जिसकी के रूप में शांतनीरा नदी मिली है जलधारा कभी सूखती नहीं। तुम लोग उसके जल का उपयोग क्यों नहीं करते?’
The chief ( Mukhia ) told Guru Tapas the misery of his village – “How to do agriculture? No rain, no water in wells?” Guru smiled – “This village has got a boon, as the Shantinira river has never been drained. Why don’t you use its water?”
मुखिया बोला- ” गुरुवर! यह कैसे संभव है कि इतनी दूर की नदी का जल हम अपने खेतों तक ले आएं?” तापस ऋषि बोले- ” प्रियवर! यदि तुम आज संकल्प लो कि सभी मिल-जुलकर शांतनीरा नदी से गांव तक नहर का निर्माण करोगे, तो तुम्हारी मेहनत तुम्हारा भाग्य बदल देगी।” गुरु अपने छात्रों के साथ वापस गुरुकुल लौट गए।
The head said- “sir! How is it possible that we can bring the water of such a remote river to our fields?” Tapas sage said, “Dear, today if you take a pledge today that all together will construct a canal from Shantinira river to the village, your hard work will change your fate.” Guru returned to Gurukul with his students.
गुरु के जाने के बाद कुछ देर तो उन ग्रामवासियों ने सलाह-मशविरा किया, परंतु उनमें से पहल करना कोई नहीं चाहता था। सभी सोचते थे कि पहले दूसरे लोग श्रमदान कर लें। फिर देखा जाएगा। इस टालमटोल के कारण नहर खोदने का कार्य प्रारंभ नहीं हो सका। गुरु तापस को अचलपुर ग्रामवासियों की टालमटोल का पता चल चुका था। एक सप्ताह के बाद गुरु तापस ने प्रतिदिन उनमें से एक एक शिष्य को अचलपुर भेजना शुरू किया। आश्चर्य सभी शिष्य निराश हो-होकर वापस लौटने लगे। कोई भी उन्हें नहर बनाने के लिए तैयार नहीं कर पाया।
After the Guru’s departure, those villagers consulted for some time, but none of them wanted to take initiative. Everyone thought that first other people should do donate. Will be seen again. Due to this delay, the work of digging the canal could not start. Guru Tapas had come to know about the delay of Achalpur villagers. After a week, Guru Tapas started sending one of his disciples to Achalpur every day. Surprised, all the disciples got frustrated and started returning. Nobody could prepare them to build a canal.
अंत में देवदत्त नामक शिष्य सामने आया। वह शारीरिक रूप अपंग था बचपन में ही उसका एक पैर बेकार हो चुका था। उसके चेहरे पर दृढ़ निश्चय के भाव देखकर गुरु ने उसे अचलपुर जाने की अनुमति दे दी। दो-चार दिन बीत गए। देवदत्त वापस नहीं लौटा। गुरु तापस को चिंता हुई। दूसरे दिन उन्होंने दो शिष्यों को देवदत्त की तलाश के लिए भेजा, लेकिन वे भी वापस नहीं आए। अगले दिन गुरु तापस गांव गए। आश्चर्य था कि नहर निर्माण का कार्य तो प्रारंभ हो चुका था, वदत्त व अन्य शिष्यों के साथ ग्रामवासी नहर की खुदाई में जुटे हुए थे। देवदत्त सहित सभी लोगों ने गुरु तापस को प्रणाम किया। गुरु ने खुशी से देवदत्त को गले लगाते हुए पूछा- ” वत्स! यह चमत्कार कैसे ?”
Finally, a disciple named Devadatta appeared. He was physically crippled and had lost one of his legs as a child. Seeing a sense of determination on his face, the Guru allowed him to go to Achalpur. Two or four days passed. Devdutt did not return. Guru Tapas got worried. The next day he sent two disciples to search for Devadatta, but they too did not return. The next day Guru Tapas went to the village. Surprised that the work of canal construction had started, the villagers along with Vadatta and other disciples were engaged in digging the canal. All people including Devadatta bowed to Guru Tapas. The Guru happily embraced Devadatta and asked- “Watts! How is this miracle?”
देवदत्त ने सहज भाव से उत्तर दिया- ” गुरुवर! सब शिष्य अचलपुर वासियों को केवल मौखिक रूप से नहर निर्माण का उपदेश दे रहे थे। मैंने ऐसा कोई उपदेश नहीं दिया। मैं यहां आते ही स्वयं नहर खोदने के काम में जुट गया। एक बार कार्य प्रारंभ हुआ, तो सभी ग्रामवासियों को महसूस हुआ कि एक अपंग शिष्य, अथक परिश्रम कर इतना साहस और उत्साह दिखा सकता है, तो उन्हें भी ईश्वर ने दो-दो हाथ-पैर दिए हैं। क्यों नहीं वे भी मेहनत कर अपना भाग्य बदल डालें।
Devdutt replied instinctively – “Guruvar! All the disciples were preaching the canal-building only verbally to the Achalpur dwellers. I did not give any such preaching. I got engaged in the work of digging the canal itself once I came here When the work started, all the villagers felt that a handicapped disciple can show so much courage and enthusiasm by working tirelessly, then God too has given them two or two hands and feet. Why don’t they also work hard and change their destiny?
एक-एक करके सब ग्रामवासी इस पुनीत कार्य में सम्मिलित होते चले गए।” गुरु तापस ने गद्गद होकर देवदत्त को गले से लगाया। वह समझ
गए थे कि उसकी शिक्षा पूर्ण हो गई है। उसने समझ लिया था कि उपदेश से बेहतर है कि पहले हम स्वयं कुछ करके दिखाएं। आदर्श
स्थापित करें, तभी हमारी बात का लोग पालन करेंगे।
One by one, all the villagers went on to participate in this charitable work. “Guru Tapas was thrilled and embraced Devadatta. He understood Went that his education is complete. He understood that it is better to preach than to preach. Ideal Establish, then only people will follow our words.
