Speech On Peace and Harmony

Hello, everyone. Thank you for having me. My name is ______ _______, and I am going to be speaking to you today about _______.

Peace and harmony is the basic need of any country. The citizens of the country can feel safe and prosper only when the environment is maintained peaceful. Although India has a largely peaceful environment for all kinds of people, yet the peace and harmony of the country is disrupted many times due to various factors.

Unity in diversity is seen in India. People of different religions, castes and creeds live together in the country. The constitution of India gives freedom of equality to its citizens and various laws have been implemented by the government to ensure peace and harmony in the country.

Peace and harmony are the basis of building any society. If there is peace and harmony in the country, then development can happen everywhere. The government of the country tries hard to ensure peace and harmony in the country but it is often hindered due to vested interests. Here is a look at all the reasons and examples given when peace was disturbed in the country.

Factors Affecting Peace and Harmony

While the Government of India is taking all possible steps to maintain peace and harmony in the country, there are many factors that affect it. Here’s a detailed look at them:

  • Religion

The Constitution of India does not officially follow any religion and allows its citizens to choose or change their religion at any time. However, there are some religious groups who spread their religion to such an extent that it disturbs the peace and harmony of the country.

  • Caste System

Discrimination on the basis of a person’s caste and religion is common in India, although the constitution gives everyone the right to equality. This discrimination sometimes disturbs the social balance which disturbs the peace.

  • Reservation system

The reservation system was started in the country with the aim of increasing the standard of living of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, but people from other castes such as the Gujjar and Jat community have also started demanding reservation, which has disturbed the peace system.

  • inter-state issues

Many regional parties do not encourage people from other states to settle in their area. This often creates a lot of tension between Shiv Sena members and people from other states in Maharashtra.

  • unemployment and poverty

Lack of education and lack of good employment opportunities leads to unemployment, which ultimately increases poverty and increases the crime rate in the country.

  • political threat

Many times the opposition incites the public against the party in power to fulfill its own selfish objectives which ultimately lead to unrest and disturbances.

  • Dearness

Price rise is another problem that can hamper the smooth functioning of a society. There have been many instances when people have come forward to revolt against unreasonable price hikes which have disrupted peace.

  • terrorism

India has faced terrorist attacks several times which have created fear among the citizens. The disturbance caused by such attacks disrupts the normal functioning of the society.

Examples of Disruption of Peace and Harmony

There are many instances when the peace and harmony of the country was compromised with different groups and communities. Some such examples are shared below:

Gujarat riots of 1969: The Indian state of Gujarat witnessed communal violence between Hindus and Muslims between September–October 1969. It was the first major riot in the state involving mass carnage and looting.

Sikh riots of 1984 : Violent mobs attacked Sikhs in the country. This was done as a response to the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by Sikh bodyguards.

Mumbai, 2008: Some members of the Islamic terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba entered Mumbai and carried out a four-day spree of shootings and bombings.

Jat Reservation Movement: In February 2016 several protests were organized by Jat people in Haryana. They demanded inclusion of their caste in the category of Other Backward Classes. It disrupted the normal functioning of the state and even today the agitation is not completely over.

Though the constitution of India gives right to equality to all its citizens, so as to ensure complete harmony among them but due to many social, political and economic reasons peace has been disturbed. The government alone cannot be responsible for maintaining peace and harmony in the country. Each one of us should also take the responsibility of nurturing the feelings of brotherhood along with our citizenship.

I am going to end my speech with these words,

Thanks to you all
